Have you ever thought about your overarching purpose as a writer? An overarching purpose is a purpose that is more important than anything else. It encapsulates your entire reason for being a writer.
Here's how to discover your overarching purpose as a writer in just five minutes.
Consider Your Audience
As writers, we are always writing for an audience whether it’s an audience of one person or ten million followers. So, it's important to think about your audience when considering your overarching purpose as a writer.
Take a few moments to consider your audience. What do they always expect from you whenever you show up in the form of a blog post, a book, an article or an anecdote?
Do they expect to learn something new or laugh out loud? Will they feel encouraged or inspired by your words? Perhaps your readers will be surprised, shocked or terrified by your latest thriller or horror novel?
Be unique. Be yourself. Your writer’s voice will be different from anyone else’s and that’s OK. In fact, it’s more than OK, it’s essential. Your individuality will draw readers to you.
Describe Your Overarching Purpose in One Sentence
Write a sentence that describes your overarching purpose as a writer. Don’t overthink it. The first sentence that comes to mind is almost always the correct one.
Mine is: ‘My overarching purpose as a writer is to inspire other people to live a happier and more fulfilling life.’
No Idea of Your Overarching Purpose as a Writer?
If you’re a relatively new writer or if you haven't had much work published, you may unsure of your overarching purpose as a writer.
That's OK. Just start writing or carry on writing. As you write more and more and connect with your audience, your overarching purpose will become clear to you.
What is your overarching purpose as a writer? Feel free to share it in the comments.
